Can expired condoms be used?

Expired condoms are not recommended for use. After the condom expires, the material may age and crack, and the lubricant may become ineffective, which may increase the risk of contraceptive failure and infection.

The main material of condoms is natural latex or polyurethane, and the molecular structure will gradually degrade after the expiration date. Latex covers may have reduced elasticity and increased brittleness, and may easily develop micropores or tears that are invisible to the naked eye during use. Although polyurethane sleeves have high stability, long-term storage will still reduce the tensile strength. After the components in the lubricant decompose over time, they may form irritating substances or lose their lubricating effect, increasing friction and causing damage to the sleeve.

In a few cases, when unopened and recently expired condoms are used for emergency use, you need to carefully check the integrity of the packaging and whether there is any adhesion or hardening. But even if the appearance is normal, its protective performance can no longer meet the blasting volume and pressure test indicators required by international standards. For those with latex allergies, expired condoms are more likely to cause contact dermatitis. Special environments such as high temperature and humidity will accelerate material deterioration, and may fail prematurely even before the marked expiration date.

It is recommended to choose condoms within the validity period and store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Please check the production date, packaging sealing and product certification mark before use. If the sleeve is found to be sticky, brittle or the lubricant is caked, discard it immediately. Proper use of qualified condoms can effectively prevent unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
